Featured keynote speaker: Olivia Messinger Carril, co-author of Bees in Your Backyard, winner of the 2017 PROSE Award. Olivia Messinger Carril received her Ph.D. in plant biology from Southern Illinois University and has been studying bees and the flowers they visit for nearly twenty years.

Lucy Davenport is a self-taught bonsai artist that gained her knowledge and interest in bonsai from the many international bonsai collections she has visited. The strong spiritual presence she feels from the ancient bonsai specimens inspired her to start her own business, Bonsai Akira; “akira” means “brilliance” or “clarity”.
During this workshop, Lucy will go over the plant’s needs from soil to climate zone— and care for the first year through the four seasons. The lecture will be followed by hands-on instruction during which time Lucy will help students in beginning to shape their very own miniature tree to take home!
