VIDEO ARCHIVE

What a tease!  We had a great day this past week and it has given us a taste of the summer weather yet to come…  You would think that would make everyone feel better, only I think its worse!  You get one day of really nice weather and then we are back in the rain again… oh well, I guess I just have to ‘stage’ everything by the door and wait for the next break in the showers. The good news is, you don’t have to wait for the next episode of Garden Time, and here it is!!!

This week we featured...

Rosie’s Cilantro Pot

Rosie’s Cilantro Pot

Growing your own vegetables and herbs are very popular right now.  So to learn how to make an herb pot we went to one of the local experts, Rosie Sullivan from N & M Nursery (503-981-9060).  Rosie, and her husband Sean, grow herbs and perennials that they sell at the Beaverton Farmers Market and to local garden centers around the area.  She showed us how to plant up 2 different kinds of planters, one for cooking herbs, and one just for your favorite herb, which in this case was cilantro.  Rosie recommends that you keep the cilantro separate from your other herb pots.  It is such a short lived annual that you should cut it and use it 4-5 times and then just compost the plant.   In the culinary herb pot you can include African Blue Basil, chives, sweet basil, Rosemary, Oregano, thyme and sage.  Stop by and see Rosie this weekend when the Beaverton Farmers market opens for the season, then try building your own herb pot this spring and enjoy fresh herbs all summer long.

Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden

Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden

We went to see the Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden for their big Portland Rhododendron Show and Plant Sale that happens every year on Mother’s Day weekend.  Dick Cavender talked to William about all the changes to the garden.  He even told us what we should be doing with our own rhodies after this cold and wet winter.  If you have some winter damage, he recommends that you wait for a couple of months yet to see if the damage is permanent.  The root system for rhododendrons is pretty strong so you may be able to save your favorite plants.  He also covered all the events happening at the garden this weekend.  We also talked about the benefits the garden has enjoyed because of the generosity of gardeners and rhododendron lovers around the state. The garden is maintained by volunteers and the plant sale that the Rhododendron Society is conducting helps to raise funds for the garden.  If you would like to learn more about the garden and about volunteering check out the Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden website, or call 503-771-8386.

Little Prince Green Walls

Little Prince Green Walls

Going green is easy if you have the right equipment.  With the push for everyone to decorate every part of their garden, people have embraced ‘green walls and roofs’.  These are plantings that you maintain on your wall or on the roof.  The hard part with the wall is finding a system that allows you to secure the plants and keep them watered.  We found a great one at Little Prince of Oregon.  Little Prince is a wholesale grower and they are best known for growing the ‘Stepables’ line of ground covers.  Ryan called us recently to tell us how excited they were to find a system that would allow them to plant a wall of the ‘Stepables’ product or any type of plant!  We had to see for ourselves.  Their living wall system mounts on a bracket that you place on the wall.  The unit has 10 little spaces that will hold a 4 inch plant.  You can just plant any 4 inch that you find at your garden center and then mount it on the bracket and you are done.  one of the hardest parts of the old ‘wall’ systems was the watering.  This system has slits in the spaces so all you have to do is water it from the top and it drips down through the entire tray.  They even have a reservoir that will hold the water so you don’t have to water so much!  You will find these systems at a lot of the local garden retailers and you can find the one nearest you by checking the Little Prince website.

Earthpots Container

Earthpots Container

A couple of weeks ago we showed you the Earthpots container.  This is a completely natural planting pot that you plant directly in the ground where it breaks down in the soil.  There is no transplant shock, no wasted plastic pot and you have a healthier plant too.  This week Melanie showed Judy how easy it is to plant up a container with Earthpot plants.  They grow vegetables, but they also grow a huge assortment of herbs and perennials too!  You found a great selection at Farmington Gardens in Beaverton, but you can find more retailers on the Earthpots website.

Kindergarden – Painted Trellis

Kindergarden – Painted Trellis

This week’s Kindergarden segment allows the young artist to get involved in the garden!  Amy Bigej from Al’s Garden Center (503-981-1245) joined William to show us how you can build and paint a trellis to add color and character to your garden.  First we focused on the girls to see how they were using basic oil paints (oil paint will last longer in the rain) to bring some great color to a fan trellis.  Then we moved over to the boys to see how they were building a trellis out of simple wood slats for the garden.  These can be used in the garden or in a pot that will be on a deck or patio.  Check out the full list of Kids Garden classes on the Al’s website.
