YARD, GARDEN & PATIO SHOW SPECIAL

VIDEO ARCHIVE

Welcome back to Garden Time. Even though we return to the air this week for the Yard, Garden and Patio Show, this really isn’t the beginning of our season. We ‘officially’ start our 6th season in two weeks on the 5th of March.  But, we just had to come back early and showcase the 24th annual Yard, Garden and Patio show. The YGP is the kick-off to spring for lots of Northwest gardeners and we stopped by the Oregon Convention Center to see some of our favorite vendors. You can check the featured vendors on our show and save a few bucks, too. Just print out the discount coupon on our website and save $2 on your admission. The Yard, Garden and Patio show continues today (Saturday) until 7:30 and tomorrow (Sunday) from 10am to 5pm.

Enjoy the show and we will see you in 2 weeks!

This week we featured...

ProGrass

The Northwest landscape can become very boring. We tend to forget that we can grow lots of different plants and end up growing what we see in our neighbor’s yard! We are not just stuck with the same old varieties. We visited with Steve Varga in the ProGrass/Garden World ‘Curiously Cool Plants’ display garden. This garden features some of the most unique plants that are grown right here in the Pacific Northwest. Steve worked with Garden World (503-982-2380) to pick out some very unusual plants that can really make your garden pop! Steve talked about how you can use a cool plant and make it fit in your garden without seeming out of place. They even have a list of ‘Curiously Cool’ plants that you can take to Garden World or any local specialty garden center. ProGrass (800-776-4727) can help you plant them or design your garden so you have a place to put those cool plants.

He also talked about the new irrigation controller from Rainbird. Once those plants are in the ground you have to make sure they survive and this new controller makes sure they are properly watered year-round. It reads the temperature, rain conditions and the history of your garden and only waters your yard when it needs water. It saves you time, energy and money! The best news… it can be retrofitted to your current system! If you have any questions about irrigation and yard watering you can listen to Steve explain it at his seminar at 4pm on Saturday. Stop by their booth or check out their video on the ProGrass site to learn how it operates.

Molecat

Moles are a real problem in the Northwest. Though some people like moles, the majority of gardeners have problems with moles in their lawns and gardens. We found a brand new product that will take care of your mole problem for good! Vern, the inventor of the Molecat (877-MOLECAT), joined us to share the story behind this interesting invention. Vern was watching the news and the idea of how a damaging concussive blast can be deadly and it made him think about the moles in his yard and how he could get rid of them, and the Molecat was born. The Molecat uses the same type of concussion or power as a pneumatic nail gun. This mole trap uses a ‘blank’ type of shell that is triggered by the mole when he is coming up to the surface to re-plug his hole. The Molecat has safety features built in and is no more dangerous than any other trap or bait on the market when used correctly. Stop by their booth or check them out on-line. You can also go on-line to see the local retailers that carry the Molecat product.

Oregon Hot Tub

You have worked hard in the garden and now it is time to relax. Oregon Hot Tubs (877-533-7772) has a booth at this year’s show and we stopped by to chat with James to find out what were the most asked questions about hot tubs. The questions include; how easy is it to care for, can they be energy efficient, and who can take care of it if I have problems in the future. James told us that the new tubs for today are made to the highest standards. They are very easy maintenance, highly efficient and fun to have in the garden. You can get a tub with lots of bells and whistles. From wireless TV’s and gaming systems, to top of the line stereo systems and numerous seating options, they can fit any yard or lifestyle. In the gardening industry we are always talking about garden rooms and Oregon Hot Tubs considers the backyard as the biggest room in your house! It is time to sit in that room and enjoy your yard or garden year round! Stop by their booth or check out the Oregon Hot Tub website for more answers to your outdoor entertaining questions.

Terra Casa

If you have ever driven through the city of Damascus in the east metro area you have probably seen the Terra Casa (503-577-8242) store. A lot of people think that they only carry pottery, because of the huge selection that you can see from the street, but they have so much more. Diana has packed their booth with tons of garden and home décor items to show people all of the cool things they carry. Some of the real trendy items right now are firepots. These pots use a solid fuel and can be burned inside or out. They are decorative and give off a wonderful flame. Other items she brought included lots of bird themed items. Birds are popular in the garden and now you can bring them inside with these cute décor items. The sound of water is very soothing and Terra Casa can make a fountain for your home of garden out of any of their containers at the store. As you can see they are a gift store that is packed full of wonderful gifts and decorative items.

Bauman’s Farm and Garden

Every year Brian Bauman tries to outdo himself in decorating his booth for the Yard, Garden and Patio show. He always looks for the latest in plants and decorative items to bring to the Bauman’s Farm and Garden (503-792-3524) booth. This year we think he struck a gold mine. Judy joined him to see what he has stocked for the early spring gardener. The first thing that caught our eye was the new solar lamps with hand blown glass. These are very cool looking and will add flare to your night time garden entertaining. He has also found dried palms that are in lots of different colors. Another decorative item is fake, flowering branches made out of balsa wood. They are on wires that can be bent into any shape and look fantastic in a vase or container. Some of the cool plants Brian has brought in are orchids, bird of paradise plants, purple antheriums, and variegated queen’s tears. The Bauman booth is full of very cool plants and décor items. Don’t worry if you miss out on these great plants at the show, he will have more at his store in Woodburn.

EarthPots

One thing that frustrates the Northwest gardener are those plastic pots that your plants are grown in. A lot of nurseries take them back to be recycled, but there are many that don’t. We found a new type of pot that will eliminate all that waste once and for all. The Earthpot is a totally new concept in growing nursery plants. Melanie told William how these pots are better for the plants that are grown in them and for the environment too. The Earthpot is a biodegradable container that is made from a special fabric. This fabric holds the roots and soil in and also lets the air and water into the roots for a healthier plant. No more do you have soil falling all over as you try to transplant a flower or vegetable to your garden beds. The whole container can be planted into the ground and so there is no transplant shock and your plant is off to a better and quicker start. A lot of growers are now using this pot for growing plants and you can also find them for use if you want to grow your own plants in them too. If you stop by the Earthpots booth during the Yard, Garden and Patio show you can receive a free Earthpot plant (while supplies last). You can also order them on-line from Earthpots at www.OBCEarthpots.com. If you would like to make a positive difference in your garden and the world, stop by your local garden center and ask for the Earthpot!
