The preferred aesthetic of a Scholar’s Rocks is based on subtleties of color, shape, markings, surface of wood, and sound. Prized qualities include awkward symmetry, resonance of sound when struck, resemblance to mountainous landscapes and texture. Stones are often displayed on a wood pedestal that has been carved specifically for the stone.

Scholars' Rocks also known as Gongshi have been collected for aesthetic and religious purposes evolving from the use of larger stones in gardens for over 1,000 years. These stones were also used by scholars (also known as literati) for meditation and inspiration. Scholars' Rocks can be a variety of stone, set on carved rosewood pedestals.
