Lan Su Chinese Garden, Portland, OR

Lan Su Chinese Garden in partnership with Asia America, presents an exhibition of Gongshi for the entire month of April in celebration of Scholar's Arts month in the garden! This will be a unique opportunity to purchase these prized and rare stones for your own inspirational collection.

The preferred aesthetic of a Scholar’s Rocks is based on subtleties of color, shape, markings, surface of wood, and sound. Prized qualities include awkward symmetry, resonance of sound when struck, resemblance to mountainous landscapes and texture. Stones are often displayed on a wood pedestal that has been carved specifically for the stone.

Scholars' Rocks also known as Gongshi have been collected for aesthetic and religious purposes evolving from the use of larger stones in gardens for over 1,000 years. These stones were also used by scholars (also known as literati) for meditation and inspiration. Scholars' Rocks can be a variety of stone, set on carved rosewood pedestals. With a range in form and color, coarse or smooth and have dramatic form meant to evoke feeling from the viewer. https://lansugarden.org
